I printed this off and plan to use it in my classroom as we discuss this habit. I like this because it gives proactive behaviors and reactive behaviors. I think students need to also understand proactive language versus reactive language and be able to identify this.

This website is by a teacher talking about what she did in class to talk about Habit 1. At the bottom of the page she gives examples of proactive and reactive behaviors for students to sort out. I will be using these examples with my students and talking about them.
Here is a link to a school that has slide shows of the 7 habits:

Many of the teachers have metal wreaths hanging outside their door this year. First grade is using their wreaths as kindness wreaths. Anytime someone in our class is recognized for acting in a win-win way, listening before speaking (seek first to understand...), or synergizing with classmates or other students, they get to tie a ribbon on our wreath. It will be fun to watch our metal frame grow into a beautiful wreath.
ReplyDeleteTo go along with this idea we are also using the book "Have You Filled Your Bucket" which talks about filling buckets when you show kindness to others. Each child has a small bucket in our room that they put a pom pom in when they do something from above. When their bucket is full, they receive a certificate and small prize.
The kids seem to really like these two ideas and are trying hard to earn a ribbon and pom pom.

Great ideas! Thanks for sharing, Jeanine!
DeleteHere is a fun link that I found about 30 great Dr. Seuss quotes. There are a lot of them that could be used in your classrooms. It would be fun to try to figure out in which book it was written in.
